ORYL Photonics is a startup located in Epalinges near Lausanne (Switzerland). We are the first company to commercialize laboratory instruments based on Second Harmonic Scattering, a non-linear optical effect which is triggered using femtosecond lasers. We have just launched our first instrument, the Oryl F1, tailored for solubility and aggregation-research within industrial and academic life science laboratories.

To strengthen our team we are looking for you as

Head of Application Science

In this pivotal role directly reporting to the CEO, you play a key part in ORYL’s commercialization strategy by sharpening the application focus and customer segment strategy and translating it into action. You take the lead in fostering current applications, as well as exploring new ones for our instruments.

The position is located in Epalinges, Switzerland, within the thriving Biopole community.

Your role and responsibilities include

• Leading a growing team of scientists and laboratory technicians

• Developing new and competitive application data for thought leadership content and sales collateral

• Being responsible for the execution and reporting of the measurement services we offer

• Delivering excellent application pre- and post-sales support

• Being responsible for the continuous technical education of the application and sales team

• Translating commercial application needs into scientific designs and content

• Actively engaging with the sales team to run scientific programs

• Supporting Operations with the test and validation of our products

• Supporting R&D in further development and optimization of our instruments, software, consumables and other technologies

• Supporting the Marketing and Sales teams by attending key conferences

• Managing activities with external partners for public grants related to application development

We need somebody who

• Has a vast experience in life science research, and is aware of the current state of the art as well as bottlenecks especially in the areas of drug discovery and formulation, vaccine development, biotechnology and genetic engineering, and diagnostics

• Is self-motivated and highly independent

• Ideally has experience in solubility and aggregation measurements using nephelometry/linear scattering or HPLC

• Is customer-centric and has a high commercial drive and enjoys interacting with customers of all nationalities and cultures

• Has a great business acumen, and can see the big picture of what the company needs and execute this into action

• Ideally has proven management experience to lead a team of Application Scientists located in-house and in the field

• Has leadership capabilities with a high degree of curiosity in exploring and satisfying the needs of the customers

What we expect

• PhD in Pharmaceutical technology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related fields

• Minimum 3 years life science industry experience

• Experience in assay and method development as well as data evaluation and statistics

• Keen and able to travel with overnight stay (approx. 10% of time)

• Excellent English language skills

• Solid computer skills including demonstrated ability to leverage generative AI tools

• Excellent writing and presentation skills
