We’re seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a team behind Apple Maps’ real-time traffic systems. This role blends deep domain expertise, strong technical leadership, and product intuition to shape the future of navigation.

You’ll define technical direction, guide strategy, and ensure the performance and reliability of large-scale, real-time data systems. If you're passionate about building great teams, working with complex data, and solving hard systems problems, we’d love to hear from you.

You will lead a team that builds scalable, resilient systems that process high volumes of live and historical location data to power Apple Maps' real-time traffic and routing capabilities.

In this role, you will:

• Guide technical decisions, shape system architecture, and ensure high-quality engineering execution to support scale, resilience, and performance.

• Stay technically deep, engage in architecture, code, and critical decisions, while empowering your team to lead and take ownership.

• Manage, mentor, and grow a team of experienced engineers across Zurich and Cupertino.

• Foster a culture of ownership, innovation, inclusivity, trust, and open communication.

• Collaborate closely with product, data science, and infrastructure partners to define roadmaps and deliver impactful features.

• Lead operational excellence, including on-call rotations and incident response for critical services.

• Leverage your domain knowledge in traffic or mobility to make thoughtful decisions about tradeoffs, priorities, and emerging opportunities.

MS or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

2+ years of experience leading senior engineers

7+ years of experience in software development, preferably in backend or data-intensive systems

Strong foundation in algorithms, distributed systems, and data processing at scale

Proficiency in a typed language such as Java, Scala, or C++

Experience working in complex, data-intensive problem domains

Experience in traffic, navigation, or geospatial systems

Proven ability to define and deliver technical strategies aligned with product goals

Strong cross-functional collaborator with data scientists, researchers, and product managers

Effective communicator with the ability to influence across technical and product domains

Familiarity with scalable data architectures (e.g., Spark, Flink, Kafka) and cloud-native infrastructure (e.g., Kubernetes)
