Cryogenic electronics for quantum computers
Ref. 2021_025
Cryogenic electronics offer a promising path forward for improving the performance of quantum computers. One key component already used today inside cryostats is the low-noise amplifier, which amplifies the qubit readout signals. To support future advanced quantum computers the power dissipation of these devices must be significantly reduced, while maintaining overall electrical performance.
Cryogenic low-noise amplifiers are today based on HEMTs, transistors containing III-V compound semiconductors. This Master’s thesis project aims to understand the behavior of HEMTs at low temperatures, and to develop new process modules to tailor their operation in such environments.
The work will include:
• Nanofabrication of devices inside the BRNC cleanroom
• Cryogenic electrical characterization of fabricated devices
• Analysis and modeling
The candidate will join the Physics & Science of Information group at IBM Research Europe in Zurich. The project is available for a minimum duration of six months. Please note that this is a non-remunerated M.Sc. thesis project, not a funded position.
